Epicurus (341–270 B.C.) founded one of the major philosophies of ancient Greece, helping to lay the intellectual foundations for modern science and secular individualism. Many aspects of his ideology are still highly relevant some twenty-three centuries after being first taught in his school in Athens, called “the Garden.” For Epicurus, a philosophy aimed to attain a happy, tranquil life characterized by ataraxia, peace, and freedom from fear, and aponia, the absence of pain, and living a self-sufficient life surrounded by friends.
